We take pride in our homemade sauces, sourced from the finest California and Italian ingredients, and our recipes are deeply rooted in the culinary traditions of Southern Italy, passed down through generations. Our History
Sandro’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant is proud to be part of a family tradition that has brought authentic Italian dining to the New River Valley for over 40 years. Our story begins with Domenico Pugliese, who immigrated from Naples, Italy, to the United States and started his culinary career in Long Island, New York.
In 1978, Domenico and his wife visited Radford, Virginia, and fell in love with the area. Seeing an opportunity to bring a taste of Italy to the community, Domenico opened the first Sal’s Italian Restaurant in West End Radford. It quickly became a favorite among locals, not just for its authentic Italian dishes but for the warm and welcoming atmosphere that reflected the Pugliese family’s values. Today, Sal’s remains a local landmark, often referenced in giving directions—proof of its deep connection to the community.
The family’s culinary legacy continued with the opening of Sal’s Jr. in Fairlawn in 2004. Operated by Alessandro Pugliese, also known as Sandro, Sal’s Jr. brought the same quality and care as the original location while catering to a growing clientele in the area. Over the years, both restaurants established themselves as staples of the New River Valley, known for fresh, made-to-order pasta dishes, house-made sauces, and a commitment to quality.
In 2021, Alessandro took the family’s tradition a step further by opening Sandro’s Italian Restaurant in Christiansburg’s newly renovated Marketplace. Sandro’s builds on the foundation laid by Sal’s and Sal’s Jr., while offering its own unique dining experience. From classic Italian comfort foods to weekly specials, Sandro’s is all about delivering authentic flavors in a setting designed for families, friends, and food lovers.
While each restaurant—Sal’s, Sal’s Jr., and Sandro’s—has its own identity, they are united by the same commitment to authentic Italian cuisine and family-oriented hospitality. At Sandro’s, we continue to honor the values that started it all: fresh ingredients, recipes passed down through generations, and a dedication to the community that supports us.
